While spending the Christmas Holidays in Flagstaff one year,  my partner and I had a very unexpected pleasant surprise in finding this wonderful continental restaurant, The Cottage Place, owned by multi-award winning chef Frank Branham.  It was quite cold there that year, and I was recovering from a broken wrist while walking my dog, Bobo, a couple of days earlier.  After being in the hospital, I was ready for a really good meal.  Frank Branham’s Cottage Place came to our rescue.

We started our meal with some delicious Stuffed winter Squash Blossoms with a seasoned goat cheese filling.  They were perfectly battered and quickly fried in a tempura-like manner, making them exceptionally light.  The sauce, an Ancho Aïoli, was an excellent compliment.

Next up, as our main course were fresh Colorado Lamb Chops, grilled, and served with a Port Wine Mint sauce.  They were fabulous; perfectly cooked, seasoned, and presented ( see picture below).  They were accompanied by sautéd carrots and a delightfully light corn relish.

For dessert, my partner, a chocolate lover, couldn’t resist the Chocolate Decadence, a very rich fudge-like chocolate cake with a delicious Raspberry Purée and Chantilly Cream.  I opted for the Tuxedo Strawberries, dipped in a minty white chocolate sauce.

The restaurant has a wonderful welcoming ambience, and Frank is both a great host and chef.  This was a great find in a very unexpected place; you never know what your travels will unveil.  While in the Flagstaff area, absolutely make sure you drive about 100 miles or so north to one of the natural wonders of the world, The Grand Canyon.
