Joe T. Garcia’s is a mainstay in Fort Worth, Texas, serving up fabulous Mexican food for two generations, like this combination plate ( above ). This family-run restaurant specializes in classic Tex-Mex food done right. Enchiladas, tacos, rice and beans, chips and salsa, you name it, you got it, all mouthwatering. And all homemade.
I first went to Joe T’s back in my college days, in the 1970’s. I was going to school in Dallas at the time and was needing a serious Mexican food fix, longing for my excellent native cuisine in El Paso. All I had been able to find in Dallas were either chain restaurants, which suck or bastardization versions with “California” influences, which also suck. Finally, I learned about Joe T’s, so I decided to make the drive (45-60 minutes) to Ft. Worth to check it out. I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised. They had great Chili Rellenos and REAL New Mexico Red Chili sauce. I continued to visit quite often during my time in Dallas.
Joe T’s has a welcoming atmosphere and great staff, making sure you’ll want to come back often. Do try to get there in non-peak hours, like a late lunch, or you’ll probably find a line of locals and visitors alike eagerly waiting for the delicious menu offerings. And make sure to grab a cold beer to accompany their great fare. It is a little bit out of the way ( map below), not far from the legendary country music venue, Billy Bob’s, but absolutely worth a visit.
